Westell Wirespeed 2100 Ethernet/USB Modem B90-210015-04 Review

Let me preface this by saying I’m not a tech guru, but moderately skilled, so don’t expect a lot of technobabble about the Westell modem’s capabilities or limitations, what you’re getting here is the layman’s view. My modem came via my ISP for DSL installation and overall it has worked fairly well with no major problems or flaws. Most of the problems I’ve experienced were related to problems other than the modem. On occasion the modem does seem to freeze up but even novice users by now know the traditional “turn the power off to reset” trick to get it back to functioning. There is also a handy small reset button on the rear of the modem that can be used for lingering problems. I’ve yet to encounter a problem more serious than either of those could solve. My particular unit is for small office/home office use and has operated so well I purchased a second unit to run at a second location; I guess that’s testament enough as to how favorably I view the Westells. I can’t speak for heavier usage for larger offices, but I typically run about four computers off the Westell through a router with no problems whatsoever and capacity issues have NEVER been a problem. A nice modem at a reasonable price if you ask me!

Qwest Actiontec M1000 DSL Modem

Qwest Actiontec M1000 DSL Modem Review

I was able to pick up my Actiontec M1000 for (along with a bunch of line conditioners) and it works great!

Now I will say that I don’t have Qwest as my ISP, I have Earthlink. All I had to do is change the VPI/VCI to 0/35 and it works like a charm!
For those who are wanting to use this modem with another ISP, here are the VPI/VCI numbers that you will have to change to get the modem to authenticate.
Qwest 0/32, Verizon 0/35, SBC 0/35, AT&T 0/35, SW Bell 0/35, Sprint 8/35, TDS 0/35, Bell South 8/35, CenturyTel 8/35, EarthLink 0/35, Embarq 8/35, and GSInet 8/35

Other then that, it’s a great modem. The Quest firmware is easy to setup and configure. But do some shopping around, you can get this modem for MUCH less.

Pros:
Lots of features.
Works!
Works super well with my Linksys WRT160N, much better then my super old Netopia modem.

Cons:
None.

Actiontec GT701D Ethernet DSL Modem with Routing Capabilities Review

After reading the reviews this sounded like the unit for me. I needed a new modem to replace my Speedstream 5100 which was overheating and losing sync. My network consists of 10 pc’s, and a couple of game machines, so the modem works hard.

Just to prove how easy this is to set up, I took it out of the box, connected it to the power, dsl, and to my Linksys router. I powered up the modem first, it went into search mode right away, when the power light stopped blinking I powered on my router and away it went. Not only did it connect right away, it was so much faster than my old Speedstream. I am using AT&T DSL and there sure wasn’t an issue with that.

It looks as though the unit configures itself for a “bridge mode” of some sort automatically since there weren’t any problems what so ever with this setup. My subnet in my router is 10.1.10.xxx so it doesn’t come close to the Actiontec’s 192.168.0.xxx subnet.

After the initial test I did connect the Actiontec to my laptop directly and configured it to RFC 1483 Transparent Bridging mode just so I knew the Actiontec’s routing capabilities were disabled, but I don’t think I really needed to do that. Like I said, it seemed the Actiontec detected my router and configured itself accordingly.

The router portion is really a complete router, even with QOS control for VOIP phones. If I didn’t already have the Linksys connected, that little Actiontec router would have been more than enough. Nice unit for the price.

It’s been running for a day and I will add to this review if I have any problems down the road.

By the way, when you put the Actiontec in bridge mode, the INTERNET led, does not light up at all. I thought I had a bad unit. I emailed Actiontec and got an answer in about 15 minutes. Wow. Great support to boot.
